Walking 10 miles a day for a week up and down the streets of any metropolis will inevitably yield interesting experiences and imagery.
Of all big cities, there’s nowhere better than New York to wander. And to photograph.
Three images — more than 160 blocks apart, from downtown to uptown and in-between — showcase the city’s majesty.
- The new World Trade Center masterfully blends architectural beauty, functional commerce and the solemn 9/11 Memorial Plaza and Museum.
- Yankee Stadium in the Bronx was a virtual ghost town the week after the Yankees lost the ALCS. On game days, tens of thousands of rowdy fans pack the subway across the street. This day was eerily static.
- The Imagine mosaic in Central Park commemorates John Lennon’s vision and hope for world peace. As with the 9/11 Memorial, most visitors respect the tributes’ intentions. This shot captured a sublime moment, uninterrupted by tourists and other photo takers, including those self-referential sorts who deemed it appropriate to splay atop the tile circle with selfie stick in hand.
Yep, New York City offers something for everyone, whatever your frame of mind or point of reference.
New York is one of a kind.
Need to experience that soon.
I love New York too (except perhaps your fond Yankees). Ten miles a day? Impossible in San Francisco but on flatlands, on holiday & in razzle-dazzle New York – the best.
