NEW BICYCLE SAFETY LAW MAY SPAWN ‘BIKE FEELERS’

By October 7, 2014March 6th, 2021Random/Rants

California’s bicyclist safety law may spawn a new twist on an old automobile accessory. The bike feeler would literally be an extension of the springy wire curb feelers your grandparents’ Chris Craft-sized sedans featured along the wheel wells. Those foot-long indicators were used to alert drivers of their distance from the curb.

Similarly, bike feelers attached to the side of vehicles would alert conscientious drivers if they encroach on the minimum three-foot separation space now entitled to bicyclists. Besides the safety signal coming from the noise and vibration made by the springy metal scratching against riders’ backsides, for extra assurance and sensitivity, a sensor on the device’s tip would alert drivers of close proximity to Spandex, and self-righteousness and smugness (not compatible with Prius).
